Black Friday originated in the USA and only recently became an event in the UK. It traditionally takes place on the Friday after thanks giving and signals the start of the Christmas shopping period.
Depending on who you choose to believe there are two stories to explain the name given to Black Friday. Many believe that Black Friday takes its name from the fact that this is the day that most retailers begin to make a profit and are therefore operating in the black. The second story originates in Philadelphia where Black Friday was given its name due to the huge traffic jams caused by the busy shopping day.
Black Friday traditionally takes place on the last Friday of November meaning this year it falls on Friday 25th November 2016.
